Children are important citizens in many societies, particularly here in the United States, a culture sometimes described as "child-centric." But what prompts us to think about children in the ways we often do, as fresh, innocent young people who require love and gentle instruction during their childhood, a period of learning through play? To learn about the ways people conceptualize children, childhood, family structures, and the process of "growing up," we will study how children and childhood are depicted in English literature and selected films from a variety of historical periods.
